Celebrating International Day of Older Persons in Vancouver

Sometimes meaningful change begins with a simple conversation.

On October 1, International Day of Older Persons, our CareRipples team joined seniors and community organizations at West Point Grey Community Centre in Vancouver for an event hosted by Home Instead.

The atmosphere was warm and unhurried. Seniors had time to ask questions, share experiences and learn about resources available to them. For us, that opportunity to listen was just as important as anything we could share.

Healthcare can become particularly difficult to navigate as people age. Transportation, mobility, weather, appointment availability and unfamiliar technology can all create barriers between a person and the care they need.

CareRipples exists to help make those barriers smaller.

Connecting with Organizations That Support Seniors

Home Instead provides non-medical in-home support for older adults, helping seniors remain safely and comfortably in their own homes.

Throughout the event, we also connected with people and organizations working directly with Vancouver's senior community.

These relationships matter because healthcare access does not begin only when someone enters a clinic. It often begins with a family member, caregiver or community worker helping someone understand where to turn.

By making community organizations more familiar with Avee Health and MSP-covered virtual care, we can help more British Columbians discover another option when they need timely access to primary care.

That is the idea behind CareRipples: one useful conversation can continue outward and help many more people.

Helping Seniors Access Healthcare from Home

Some of the most meaningful conversations were with seniors themselves.

We explained that eligible BC residents with valid MSP coverage can use Avee Health to speak with a BC-licensed physician or nurse practitioner by phone, without travelling to a clinic for concerns that can appropriately be managed remotely.

Questions came quickly.

Is the appointment covered by MSP? Can a family member help with booking? What kinds of health concerns can be addressed?

For many seniors, learning that care may be accessible from home can remove a significant practical burden.

Depending on the patient's needs and the practitioner's clinical judgment, Avee can support common non-emergency health concerns, prescription renewals, lab requisitions and referrals. Family members can also help seniors navigate the booking process when needed.

Virtual care is not a replacement for every in-person medical visit. But when a concern can safely be managed remotely, it can provide a simpler and more accessible way to reach primary care.

One More CareRipple in Our Community

International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to recognize the people who helped build the communities we live in today.

For our team, October 1 was also an opportunity to listen.

We are grateful to Home Instead for bringing the community together and to every senior who shared a question, experience or conversation with us.

Those conversations are exactly how CareRipples grows.
